Michael Butler, Activity Coordinator celebrates VE Day

Our guest blog today is from Michael Butler, Activity Coordinator at Hollyfields Care Home. Sharing how Hollyfields and Ivy House Care Homes in Kidderminster celebrated VE Day, with a ‘Stay at Home Street Party’, to commemorate 75 years since the end of the Second World War. Staff and residents at Hollyfields and Ivy House, along with people all over the UK, joined together for the ‘Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2’.

In light of the current situation, rather than celebrating with street parties, at 3pm on May 8th, the country was encouraged to mark the day with a nationwide toast - “To those who gave so much, we thank you”. Paying tribute to the many millions at home and abroad, that sacrificed so much to ensure we all enjoy and share the freedom we have today. Residents also celebrated the occasion by celebrating from the comfort of their own armchairs as they joined in with the 2 minutes silence before singing songs from the war. Staff dressed in fancy dress & music played over lunch to mark the celebration. Bunting and flags were draped around the home and a Rainbow Balloon arch was positioned outside the home as a mark of solidarity and hope for the end of this pandemic. The Balloon arch was made by Jade O’Brien, one of the care assistants working at the Homes who said, “I wanted to make the Arch to not only show solidarity and hope during these times but also to spread a little cheer too”

Fiona Brewin, General Manager at Hollyfields and Ivy House, said: “Many of our residents have very clear memories of the Second World War, and reminisced about their experiences, so it’s a privilege to remember and celebrate with them. We had a lovely day, and we are making sure extra effort is focused on creating an enjoyable environment for all of our residents, whilst ensuring that the group activities are smaller, adhering to social distancing advice.”
