Chef swaps whites for running shoes to support RNIB in the New York Marathon

Grant Burton, 35-year-old Head Chef at the Hawthorns in Braintree, will swap his chef’s whites for running shoes as he takes on the TCS New York Marathon

This November, 35-year-old Grant Burton, Head Chef at The Hawthorns in Braintree, will trade in his chef’s whites for running shoes as he tackles the TCS New York Marathon to raise vital funds for the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).

Grant, a father of one from Braintree, isn’t just running for the finish line; he’s running to break down barriers for people with sight loss. Set for Sunday 3rd November, the TCS New York Marathon covers 26.2 miles through the city’s five boroughs, drawing over 50,000 participants and electrifying crowds.

For Grant, each mile marks a personal victory over retinoschisis, a hereditary condition impacting his vision. By running, he’s proving that sight loss doesn’t define him.

He aims to raise £2,000 for RNIB, the UK’s leading charity supporting people living with vision loss. RNIB offers essential resources, technology, and emotional support to promote independence and a higher quality of life for those who are blind or partially sighted.

“I’m running for everyone facing the challenges of sight loss,” said Grant. “Training has been intense, but knowing I’m supporting RNIB, a cause that’s close to my heart, gives me strength. Every step I take on race day will be in honor of the support RNIB provides to people like me.”

The Hawthorns Braintree, an independent living community for those over 70 and part of Avery Healthcare, proudly supports Grant’s dedication. The team has been cheering him on throughout his marathon preparation.
