Residents from Hempton Field care home in Chinnor were all ready for class as the school bell rang and Mrs Thursby (our wonderful General Manager) Sharon, called all our student (residents) to assembly on 7th April 2021.
Going ‘Back to School’ for the day was the choice of our residents and they really went for it!
The day started with a spring themed school assembly, giving thanks for all we have, poem recitals and the whole school singing ‘All things bright and beautiful’ before our PE lesson with Mrs Clifford-Mullerworth (Nina).
All classes enjoyed a break-time drink of milk direct from the old school bottles and straws handed out by Milk Monitor (aka Head of Maintenance) John. Everyone took pleasure from an informative rolling back of the years in our history lesson, reminiscing about old school days, including songs, rhymes and games.
When teacher left the classroom, the naughty behaviour started, with paper plane making and throwing, using their snack boxes for protection! Resident George, having been nominated as School Captain soon got them back on track before teacher returned and sounded the dinner bell. He definitely wore his badge with pride all day!
Our canteen staff (Chef and the hospitality team) created an amazing menu of memories for our students of beef stew and dumpling’s or spam fritters and fries, followed by sticky toffee pudding and (of course) cold custard!
During the day we ‘virtually’ opened our school gates (via zoom) to welcome the students of Southerndown High School (Southerndown Care Home in Chipping Norton) joining us on their sponsored Cyclethon journey.
Reaching Hempton Field marks their residents and staff achieving a total 74 miles of in-house pedal cycling in support of Young Carers across Oxfordshire (Be Free Young Carers).
We’re all so proud of their achievement so far, and wish them well onto their next pit stop Middletown Grange Care Home in Witney to find out more about the challenge please visit https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/Barchester
Sharon Thursby General Manager of Hempton Field said: “Our residents had such fun, converting the home into a school for the day and dressing up in school uniform to attend each classroom activity.
The residents loved it so much that we now have requests for a Spanish Day and Beach Party!”
