The positive feedback from residents and their families, particularly regarding the improvement in wellbeing and the effectiveness of daily activities, serves as powerful evidence of the impact that well-designed activities can have.
Avante Care & Support's Northbourne Court care home has recently been revalidated by Eden Alternative assessors and awarded Platinum status. The assessment thoroughly evaluated Northbourne Court's care delivery and philosophy, which is rooted in the Eden Alternative approach. All Avante Care staff are trained to embody and implement this philosophy in their work with those they care for and support.
The revalidation of Northbourne Court focused on evidence related to the three key principles of reducing loneliness, helplessness, and boredom; the seven domains of well-being (Identity, Growth, Security, Connectedness, Autonomy, Meaning, and Joy); and the three Eden transformational changes: Personal, Environmental, and Organisational. The assessment also considered how well the home adhered to the 10 Eden Principles.
Personal Transformation was evaluated based on the staff’s understanding of these principles. Organisational Culture was assessed by examining how Eden's philosophy is integrated into policies and practices throughout the organization, as well as the extent to which leadership aligns with Eden Principles. Environmental Transformation was reviewed by assessing how homely and welcoming the care home feels.
One relative said that although their relative was living with Alzheimer’s, it was “not stopping her”, and added, “I would almost go as far as saying her memory seems improved since moving in. She really is so happy, and I am so relieved she is living there. As a family, we feel blessed."
Another resident said,” Everybody here is good to me. The staff really look after me. The daily activities are absolutely brilliant.”
Jacqui Arnold, Eden Validator, summarised the report, saying ‘It was a pleasure talking with the manager and her team, as well as the individuals they support and friends and family. It was refreshing to hear of all the accomplishments and the unique and interesting ways that Eden Principles are being implemented into the fabric of the home and to see the people living, visiting and working there thrive.
This report is a huge testament to the manager, the team and the partnership working with the residents, relatives and Avante Care & Support. Northbourne Court is an exceptional home’.
