Making space for self-care after a stressful day

A relaxing bath and reflection time

We all know that some days at work can leave us feeling drained and stressed. It's easy to push self-care aside, but taking time to unwind and reset is essential.

One of the most soothing ways to care for yourself after a tough day is to enjoy a relaxing bath.

This simple yet powerful activity, followed by a reflective journaling session can really help you gain clarity on your day.

Step 1: Indulge in a Relaxing Bath

Start by creating the perfect environment for relaxation. Choose your favourite bath products, perhaps a bath bomb, some essential oils, or bath salts that promote calm, such as lavender, chamomile, or eucalyptus.

If you can, dim the lights, light a few candles, or play some soft music in the background.

Bring in a small element of mindfulness, perhaps by closing your eyes and simply being present in the moment. Feel the water around you, notice the scent in the air, and enjoy the quietness or gentle sounds of the music.

Let this moment be about you, giving yourself permission to switch off from the outside world, if only for a little while.

Step 2: Reflect with a Journal

Once you’ve had a good soak and are feeling a little lighter, the next step in your self-care routine is to reflect on your day. Grab yourself a journal and write about how the day went, focusing on both the positives and the areas that felt more challenging.

Start with three positives. Think about what went well today. These could be small moments that brought you joy or things you accomplished. Did you have a good conversation with a colleague? Maybe you tackled something you've been putting off. Even on tough days, there are always glimmers of good.

Next, explore up to three things that didn’t go as well. What felt challenging or stressful? Allow yourself to be honest but gentle. These are learning moments.

Now take it a step further, explore why these things felt challenging. Was there a situation where you felt overwhelmed or frustrated? Were there unclear expectations or too many demands on your time? Write these down.

Finally, ask yourself how you might address these issues moving forward. For instance, could improving your boundaries help prevent some of these stresses from repeating? Perhaps a situation felt difficult because you took on more than you could handle. Would saying “no” to something, or delegating, make a difference next time? Boundaries are there to protect your time and energy, and strengthening them can be a powerful tool in creating a more balanced and fulfilling workday.

Self-care isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity, especially after a stressful day. Whether it’s enjoying a warm, calming bath or taking time to reflect in your journal, these practices allow you to reset, let go of what you don’t need, and build better habits for future challenges.

So tonight, make space for yourself. You deserve it.
