Former Woolworths employee Mabel celebrates centenary birthday

Dartford's newest centenarian celebrated her birthday this week and was treated to a surprise birthday cake by her home care provider, Bluebird Care Gravesham and Dartford.

Former Woolworth's employee Mabel Poultney celebrated the milestone on Wednesday, with the Queen among her many well-wishers on the day. Mabel enjoyed a surprise party with her family at the weekend, including her fourteen great grandchildren.

Proud Mabel receives birthday card from the Queen

Mabel said: "I have so many happy memories over the years and although I never planned to make it to 100 I feel very blessed to have lived such a long and fulfilling life! A lot of people have asked me the secret of my longevity, but I think it's just been down to working hard, keeping active and making every day count."

Mabel regularly attends St Margaret's club for the over 60s, where she has made many friends over the years.

George V was on the throne when Mabel was born, while the year also saw the first General Election in which women were entitled to vote or stand as candidates for office.

Liz Wilson, Live-in Care Manager at Bluebird Care Gravesham and Dartford, said: "We were delighted to share in Mabel's 100th birthday celebrations, she has been a valued customer for years and it was a privilege to surprise her with a birthday cake and enjoy spending time with her. Mabel's card from the Queen arrived while we were there and she was understandably thrilled to receive it."
