10 ways to bring laughter in care home activities.

Let's celebrate World Smile Day by planning in some future fun!

Laughter is often described a the best medicine, and for good reason too.

It boosts mood, reduces stress and fosters social connections.

These are all critical components of wellbeing. Therefore, it really shouldn't be overlooked as part of the care support given in a care home.

Whilst engaging in meaningful activities is very important for residents, there are times when we should look beyond my HELPS acronym to ensure that activities are suitable for each person.

When your girlfriends organise a Tapas night out and invite you along, you don't stop to think whether this would be a suitable activity for you.

You don't run through a quick checklist asking yourself

  • "Is this something that relates to my past in some way?"

  • "Have I ever eaten Tapas before?"

  • "Do I usually eat out?"

  • "Is this what I would choose to eat on a night out?"

  • "Can I stay up late to eat and drink with my friends, or will I be too tired to last the night?"

You merely consider whether you want a night out with your friends, and are you available on the night in question? - and the likelihood is that you jump in with both feet and reply "That sounds great, I could do with a night out!"

As an activity coordinator you have the opportunity to create moments of joy and laughter for residents within your activities planning.

Here are a few simple ideas to get you started:

  • Comedy Movie Night

    • Organise a weekly comedy movie night featuring classic comedies or stand-up specials.

    • Provide suitable snacks and comfortable seating to enhance the experience.

  • Funny Storytelling Sessions

    • Encourage residents to share funny stories from their past.

    • Start with a funny story of your own to set the tone.

  • Karaoke Sing-Along

    • Set up a karaoke machine and let residents sing their favorite songs.

    • Choose a mix of classic hits and humorous songs to keep things light-hearted.

  • Improv Games

    • Play improv games such as "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" with simple prompts.

    • Keep the prompts simple and fun to ensure everyone can participate.

  • Costume Day

    • Have a costume day where residents and staff can dress up in funny outfits.

    • Offer simple costume pieces like hats, glasses, and wigs for everyone to join in.

  • Laughter Yoga

    • Conduct a laughter yoga session where residents can engage in playful, laughter-inducing exercises.

    • Find a trained laughter yoga instructor to guide the session.

  • Funny Photo Booth

    • Set up a photo booth with humorous props and backdrops.

    • Print the photos and create a laughter wall for everyone to enjoy.

  • Joke Hour

    • Dedicate an hour each week to sharing jokes and funny anecdotes.

    • Collect jokes from residents ahead of time to share during the session.

  • Dance Party

    • Host a dance party with upbeat, fun music.

    • Include silly dance moves like the Big Fish, Little Fish or the Hokey Cokey.

  • Balloon Volleyball

    • Set up a simple volleyball net and play with a balloon instead of a ball.

    • The light balloon makes it easy and fun for everyone to participate.

Incorporating laughter into daily activities can make a world of difference in residents' wellbeing.

It’s not just about fun, it’s about creating meaningful, joyful moments that foster a sense of connection and belonging.

You have the power to bring lightheartedness and laughter in care home activities. Residents will truly benefit when you work towards enriching their days and contributing to their overall happiness.

So, don't hesitate, embrace the joy, and watch how it transforms your care home community.
